Arrivederci Firenze!

Today is my last day of study abroad and while reflecting on the past semester I feel both reminiscent and grateful for this opportunity and the lessons I have learned. I’ve accomplished more than I thought over these past 4 months and feel very fulfilled with all that I have done.

Academically, I got to immerse myself in coursework that was grounded in the city of Florence. I learned about renaissance art history by walking through the Uffizi Gallery and Accademia. I learned how to analyze a city outside of tourism by walking around the Florentine neighborhoods. I was challenged through my coursework, but felt engaged the entire time. Taking classes outside my traditional course of study has given me appreciation for new fields, and left me with new passions I am ready to explore.

Personally, I was able to push my own boundaries and dive deep into cultures I’ve never experienced before. I got to participate in the Ganzo Project, and bonded with an Italian family over traditional Florentine meals in their Tuscan home. I traveled to places all over. I got to go to Morocco during Ramadan and see a sense of community like I hadn’t ever before. I tasted local cuisines and heard stories from people all across the world. I learned the value of a simple conversation and the impact it can have.

I’m ready to take all that I experienced and bring it with me as I leave Florence. I have a deeper appreciation for those around me that transcends language and culture. I started to dig a little deeper into what I consume each day. I’ve leaned into local cultures and traditions and found ways to be a part of the community I find myself in. The challenges I’ve faced have left me with a new sense of calmness. I feel more confident navigating the unknown, excited for what I can take away from new experiences. These past 4 months have pushed me to grow faster than I thought possible. I learned to sit with feelings of uncomfortableness. I’ve become a better problem solver, critical thinker, and traveler.

Studying abroad was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had yet. I’m excited to come back to Pitt with all of these experiences. My new perspective undoubtedly will continue to push me towards new endeavors in an effort to continue the journey that I started in January.
