Hi! I’m Conna Kelleher, a junior at Pitt studying Marketing and Digital Media. I’m originally from Boston, MA, but this semester, I’m studying abroad in Florence, Italy – which is truly a dream! I am taking classes through Pitt’s Global Business Institute which is through CEA CAPA. So far, Florence is everything I imagined and more! As someone who wants to pursue a career in fashion marketing and media, I can’t think of a better place to learn and be inspired.
This past summer, I interned with Figmints Digital and Creative Marketing in Providence, RI, where I got to dive deep into digital marketing, working on search engine optimization and managing Facebook ad campaigns and analytics. That experience gave me a solid foundation, and now, I’m excited to apply those skills to industries I’m passionate about, where creativity takes center stage. Looking ahead, I’ll be back in Pittsburgh next summer as a Merchandising Intern with American Eagle Outfitters. My time in Europe is already giving me a global perspective, which I know will be invaluable when working with a large international brand like AEO.
Beyond professional growth, I’m here in Florence to grow as a person. I’m eager to meet people from different backgrounds, immerse myself in new experiences, and truly embrace this incredible culture. Living here for four months gives me the chance to go beyond just visiting, it’s about fully absorbing what makes Florence so special. Of course, I’m also taking advantage of Europe’s proximity to so many amazing destinations. I’ve already had my first weekend trip (to Amsterdam!) and have a handful more on the horizon.
In Florence, I’m living in an apartment with five other Pitt students, and I’m lucky that four of them are close friends from home. It’s like having a little piece of Pittsburgh here with me. Our neighborhood feels like a perfect mix of locals and fellow students, and we’ve already settled into a routine. There are two cafes on our street where we’ve become regulars for cappuccinos, and we’ve even befriended our sweet elderly downstairs neighbor, despite the language barrier.
Adjusting to life here has been easier than I expected. Florence is a walkable city, and while my 10-minute walk to class in Pittsburgh used to feel long, my 15-20 minute walk here flies by because I’m constantly taking in the beauty around me. Exploring by foot has become such a normal part of life. For example, during my weekend in Amsterdam, a 30-40 minute walk felt like the best way to see everything.
The people here have been so welcoming, too. Many locals are used to American students, but they still make an effort to connect with us, whether it’s exchanging stories or giving travel tips. It’s a wonderful balance of feeling supported while still being encouraged to step out of my comfort zone. I can’t wait to keep learning about Florence, traveling to new places, and sharing this journey with all of you!
