Hi, I’m Meena Rajesh, and I’m a junior double majoring in Marketing and Finance at the University of Pittsburgh. This semester, I’m studying abroad through Pitt and CEA CAPA at the Global Business Institute in Florence. This experience has already been incredibly rewarding both academically and personally.
I was especially excited to choose this program because of Florence’s art history and cultural significance. I’ve always been fascinated by Renaissance-era art and architecture, so studying in a city that played such a pivotal role in shaping the modern world felt like the perfect fit. One of the most exciting parts of this experience has been fulfilling my business requirements while walking past iconic landmarks like the Duomo and the Santa Croce Church on my way to class. Learning here in Florence adds so much depth to my coursework.
While I’m here, I hope to deepen my understanding of Florence’s impact during the Renaissance and how those historical developments continue to influence the modern world today. I’m also working toward becoming more proficient in Italian and pushing myself outside my comfort zone by fully immersing myself in the local culture. Academically, I want to bring a global perspective back to my marketing and finance major,
Florence embraces its heritage in a way that feels truly special. Culture exists in every corner and alleyway. Compared to Pittsburgh, Florence is incredibly walkable, and it feels surreal to pass centuries-old buildings during my everyday routine. Being surrounded by history has made even ordinary moments feel meaningful.
While both Pitt and my host institution emphasize strong academics and community, the environments feel very different. Pitt’s campus is larger and more spread out, while Florence feels intimate and integrated into the city itself. Classes here feel closely connected to the surrounding environment, which makes learning more experiential and immersive.
One of my favorite things about my neighborhood is the close proximity to grocery stores, cafés, and other daily necessities. I’ve loved becoming a regular at small local cafés and getting to know shop owners. It’s made Florence feel like home!
I’m living in an apartment with five other Pitt students, and it’s been such a fun way to experience the city together. Adjusting to a new living situation has helped me become more independent, adaptable, and open-minded. From navigating grocery shopping in Italian to sharing meals and memories with my roommates, every day feels like a learning experience.
Overall, studying abroad in Florence has already exceeded my expectations, and I’m so excited to continue exploring, learning, and growing throughout the semester.
