This semester, I am taking four classes: Sculpting, Italian, Exploring and Analyzing The Global City, and International Finance.

My diverse class schedule this semester has made everyday so exciting. I have Italian three days a week and my proficiency has been improving fast. The class is very interactive and dynamic, which makes it easier to pick up on the language. For last week’s Italian lesson, we practiced how to order food in Italian by going to a cafe. I got a croissant and a cappuccino. It has definitely been the tastiest lesson so far!
For sculpting, we have been molding replicas of parts of The David with clay. I don’t consider myself great at art, but I have improved a lot with the guidance of my professor. We take progress pictures of our works every week in sculpting, and the improvement is definitely there! My professor used to be a restorationist for the Colosseum, so my classmates and I learn a lot about modern applications of sculpting through his experience.

On Tuesdays, I have Exploring and Analyzing The Global City where we learn about Florence’s history and go on walking excursions around the city for an immersive learning experience. Two weeks ago, we walked along River Arno while we discussed the river’s relevance in trade and culture for our lesson. I enjoyed seeing the views along the river and actively experiencing the lecture.
Lastly, I have really enjoyed international finance. It has given me a broader perspective on economic transactions between countries and helped me understand global economic relations on a deeper level. It is a great academic application of my international experiences.
As a whole, I have noticed my study abroad classes are very heavy on actual application of classroom concepts. All of my professors have a very hands on approach to learning which is different from classes that I’ve normally taken. I find it really engaging to connect classroom concepts to the real world, and the classes I’m taking help me do that.
Necessary skills to be successful as a student in Florence is adaptability, the ability to be open minded, and an eagerness to learn. The classes here set up every student for success. I go to class everyday excited to immerse myself deeper in Florence and international education.
I look forward to learning more as the semester progresses! We’re only half way through and there is so much left to learn.
