Living in Florence for these past two months has been an amazing experience. I love all of my classes and enjoy learning to live in a new culture. However, it did take a little time to adjust. Coming into the program I was most nervous about the language barrier. I didn’t know any Italian and wasn’t sure if I would be able to communicate with the locals. But it actually turns out many of the locals speak both Italian and English. Even after traveling throughout Europe, I realize that many people speak their native language and English. I thought this was so cool and didn’t realize English was such a widely spoken language. Although I haven’t had a ton of troubles, I do still experience a little language barrier here and there but taking Italian has helped me adjust and learn common phrases. I always try my best to speak the Italian I learn in places like stores, markets and restaurants in order to immerse myself in the Italian culture.
Another adjustment I had to make was navigating the city. Pittsburgh is a very simple and clear city. The streets are laid out in blocks, so I always knew where I was going. Florence is very different. The streets are not as organized and straightforward. There are many different side streets and allies that can be hard to navigate. This is something I still struggle with today. But it has gotten better. I’ve learned most of the main roads and know how to get myself to simple places like school and the grocery store. Whenever I experience an uncertainty of where to go I always just ask a friend or look up the location!
My experience with interacting with the locals is always great! I try hard to practice my Italian wherever I go. There have been a few times when I mispronounce something or use incorrect grammar. When this happens, the locals are always friendly and correct me to help me learn. They understand a lot of study abroad students live here and are always happy to help us learn. I love building relationships with the people who work in the places I frequent. My roommates and I have recently met and became friends with one of the leather shop owners. We love to stop in to say hi and listen to all of his restaurant suggestions.
Although it came with some challenges at first, studying abroad has been the most rewarding experience. I am learning so much about not only the Italian culture but also myself which I will forever be grateful for!
