During my travels over the past few months, one of the most meaningful moments I have had was in Lagos, Portugal. While exploring the cliffs and beaches along the Algarve coast, I discovered a quiet cove away from the main tourist areas, surrounded by golden cliffs and clear, bright blue water. The sunlight reflected off the waves, and I could hear only the sound of the ocean. My roommates and I sat on the beach for hours talking about everything and nothing, just taking in the view and enjoying each other’s company. Being in that peaceful spot allowed me to pause and fully appreciate the natural beauty around me, and value the time I got to share with my friends.
This experience was impactful because it provided an opportunity to slow down and observe details I might otherwise overlook. Spending uninterrupted time with my roommates in this setting also deepened our friendships, as we shared conversations, laughed together, and supported each other while navigating a new place. It helped me feel more confident not just in exploring new places on my own, but also in connecting with others and appreciating the value of shared experiences. Spending time with my roommates in a new environment showed me how meaningful conversations, laughter, and support can deepen friendships, and it reminded me that personal growth often happens alongside the people you share these moments with.
Through this experience, I have grown by becoming more mindful and patient, learning to embrace quiet moments of reflection even in busy or unfamiliar settings. I have also developed greater self-reliance and comfort stepping outside my comfort zone, whether exploring new places or engaging with people from different backgrounds. I realized that even in environments that seem relaxed, it is important to create moments to slow down. Study abroad can be fast-paced, moving much quicker than you might expect, and without pausing, it is easy to miss the details and experiences that matter most. This moment in Lagos reminded me how important it is to be present, and it has influenced the way I approach new experiences with curiosity and thoughtfulness.
