Deadlines in Dublin: Time management abroad versus the United States.

on

This past week has been the first official week of working as a broadcast intern for Babylon Radio. My hours Monday-Friday are 10AM-6PM. I have a one hour lunch break from 1PM to 2PM and another short “brain break” from 4PM-4:25PM. This past week my “normal” day has looked like getting up around 8:00AM, getting dressed, eating breakfast, and making my way to the bus stop by 9:00AM. My commute is about a 45 minute bus ride and a 5 minute walk. I have to be at the office before 10:00AM every day. When I get to the office I get right to work. I am in charge of managing the physical radio station for Babylon. This includes writing/producing my own show, making sure other shows get on air, create promos, and so much more. This has been an adjustment because I am not used to having a full job all day with the same genre of tasks (radio/broadcasting). This past week I was also tasked with reorganizing the radio page on the Babylon website because there was out of date information regarding some old and new shows. This week was mainly tasked with getting my own show ready for the air. I created my graphics, came up with a theme about my radio show, and even planned out the first couple episodes. I really enjoy planning out my own show and producing it together because it has been a very rewarding experience for me. After work I usually catch the bus home and I have been cooking dinner for my roommates every night. I earned their trust when it comes to cooking! I haven’t done much touristy activities this week because my main focus has been on getting settled into work and commuting daily. One exciting thing my friends and I have done this week is go to this restaurant called “THE GOAT BAR.” There is amazing live music and an outdoor atmosphere. The food was amazing and it was a wonderful Irish way to end the week with each other after working hard. Even with the long days, I am really enjoying the work I am doing. I get to write, produce, edit, and promote my own radio show. Sometimes I sit in my chair at work and think about what I am doing in that moment and have a

I can’t believe people get paid to do this every day realization.

When it comes to my work specifically, I think this week I am managing my time a little fast. Back in the U.S, I would say I am very good at managing my time in a timely fashion. I always get things done when they are due and I spread out my work to where I am never overwhelmed. I wasn’t worried about managing my time and work in Dublin because I feel I am organized and a hard worker. I never considered that I would struggle with doing my work too fast. I am used to a much faster pace back at home then the pacing in Dublin. I was surprised when I realized I can take my time and collaborate with others more than I do at home. Completing my assigned tasks has been my number one priority that I am getting things done very fast. I was not expecting this outcome at all. I never thought I would have to make a time management adjustment based on doing my work too fast. I feel like the only stories that are told about bad time management are the ones you hear about people procrastinating their work and never handing things in on time. I think the adjustment I need to make is to take a breath and slow down. I don’t have unlimited time working at Babylon or even living in Dublin. I think if I change my mindset about time management, I can gain a whole lot more out of this experience. During my time here I want to gain as much as I can professionally and socially and I think I am so far using the right tools to have that experience. One of those tools being time management.
